This is n excellent book that recounts Perpetua s martyrdom The first couple of chapters re laborious to say the least However once you hit the primary source material you begin to shape n understanding of life in Rome during the Christian persecutions The best section of this book for me was the final chapter The insight into how her story was changed based on gender is Raiding with Morgan a must read for womennd for Christians It llows for n insight into how the formation of the Church began nd it s role in the persecution of women A useful synthesis for the general reader with some caveats That is to say Salisbury s text needs to be read with bit of caution She does Lethal Licorice (Amish Candy Shop Mystery, a solid job of summarizing what historicalnd contextual data there is for the Carthaginian Christian community Where the narrative goes Purses and Poison astrayt times is in its too urgent insistence that Rogue on the Rollaway a general trend within Carthaginian history or society mustlways be picked up in the narrative of the martyrdom of Perpetua In other words Salisbury often resorts to history in the subjunctive mood Perpetua must have thought or must have known or was very likely to have done such nd such At these moments Salisbury s book is t is weakest At best some of these connections re plausible franker cknowledgment of speculation would have been welcome The bibliography is uite good so if reader wishes to plumb little deeply into the social or historical background of Perpetua nd decide for themselves if Salisbury s conclusions re merited they would be wise to do so I love the story of the 3rd Century martyr Perpetua This book explains the story nd diary of Perpetua ccording to the world she was brought up in Fascinating read nd great insight bout Rome Carthage nd Christianity in the 3rd Century Chapter one of Women Writers of the Middle Ages A Critical Study of Texts from Perpetua 203 to Marguerite Porete 1310 starts off by introducing Vibia Perpetua woman of good fortune family nd marriage living in Carthage in AD 203 She was roughly round twenty two when she was rrested for refusing to perform compulsory Roman sacrifice in honor of the emperor At the time of her rrest Perpetua was Haunted House Murder (A Lucy Stone Mystery, a new mother who was breastfeeding her young infant She was put to death on March 7 for refusing to renounce her Christian faithnd was soon recognized s n early church martyr of the Christian faith With her was her young maidservant Felicity who was pregnant t the time Felicity went to prison with Perpetua nd lso refused to renounce her own Christian faith Promptly fter giving birth to her own young child the two were ushered into the rena where they were brutally tortured nd put to death Perpetua Daddy's Girl Series: A Taboo Erotic Collection after being beaten trampled by bullsnd tortured ended up taking her own life with Roman soldier s sword by forcing him to drive it into her own throat Chapter one continues to show examples of Perpetua s writings which were recorded in her journal during her time in incarceration In one of these writings she wrote I breast fed my child who was lready weak with hunger Anxiously I spoke to my mother bout him I consoled my brother I gave them charge of my son p 21 She continues to write bout her experience with God while she is held prisoner speaking bout the visions that she receives from God then continues to praise God even in the midst of her struggles with her concern for her child nd the rest of her family Dronke continues to reflect on her relationship with her father who stated I favored you Dark Tides (Dark Tides abovell your brothers 1 then Dronke summarizes that her father was claiming her with Weathering the Storm a possessive love 1 p 4 5 He then provides brief run down of Perpetua s reasoning for being called Wrong for Me (Motor City Royals, a Christian meaning that she follows theuthority of her new name nd if her father cannot ccept his daughter Perpetua he will gain Fiddle: One Woman, Four Strings, and 8,000 Miles of Music a perpetual daughter Joyce Salisburylso writes bout Perpetua s life nd journey to martyrdom in the book Perpetua s Passion The Death nd Memory of Young Roman Woman In chapter four of this book Salisbury writes Downright Dead about Perpetua s journey in prison Inddition to wh. Perpetua's Passion studies the third century martyrdom of young woman nd places it in the intellectua.
At has been previously stated bout Perpetua Salisbury reiterates the struggle that Perpetua had with her worry over her young son s well Left Fur Dead as the pain in losing the relationship with her father However this book provides clearer picture of what happened during her imprisonment when it says that she reuested nd received permission to have the baby stay with her in prison 2 p 87 Further Perpetua not only cared for her son in prison by having him stay with her but ccording to this text she possibly imagined herself dying with her son2 p 89 Salisbury continues to explain the trial that Perpetua nd her fellow Christians re faced with In this trial Hilarianus poses many uestions Death by Tea about her duty to her father her duty to her sonnd to her people He tries to get Perpetua to perform the sacrifice to the emperor out of pity for her son2 p 90 When she refuses even Loyalty and Lies (Chastity Falls, after being faced with the guiltnd scorn bout her choices regarding her family Hilarianus poses the deadly uestion Are you Christian to which she promptly By Way Of A Wager and boldly replies Yes Im Christian 2 p 90 Due to this Hilarianus sentences the group of Christians to be sent to the rena which Salisbury theorizes that it is because Hilarianus had contest in the rena in mind when he rrested the group 2 p 91 As I was reading I was overcome with sense of pure When Kingdom Comes awe in Perpetua s strength I found the writing of both books to be interestingnd I enjoyed how the uthors not only nalyzed her writings but The Wayward Bride (Besotted Scots, also dove into Perpetua s lifend background in order to gain better understanding of the woman who wrote this I felt compelled to read bout Perpetua Such a Dance and I found myself fighting with the urge to shake her yet hug hert the same time To think that this young woman only two years older than I m right now had the strength to let go of everything that she had ever known in order to sacrifice her own life for her beliefs causes me to wonder what I would do in that situation If I was new mother with nursing infant I would like to think that I would do everything in my power to ensure my child s safety nd wellbeing To think bout the pain that this poor young mother underwent to stand up for her faith fills me with so much conviction The strength nd faith that she must have possessed is stounding As young woman who feels so drawn to care for young children the thought of losing even one of these children who La bte du marais are not even my own fills me with pain To think that this young mother had to watchs her baby was growing weaker due to malnutrition because she was unable to feed him Laos: Keystone Of Indochina as oftens he needed breaks my heart Not only this but she then had to die knowing that her poor sweet baby would have to grow up without his mother How Foreign Policy Decisions Are Made In The Third World a figure that is so desperately needed inny person s they grow into dulthood The Geeking Out on 11C author does so well in conveying the pain that Perpetua must have felt Further the Dronke does fantastic job in portraying the relationship between Perpetua Et ainsi de suite and her fathers he integrated uotes from Perpetua s writings The Shoshoni Cookbook and went deeper into them Im Historias sobre los Fondos Bahá'ís a huge Daddy s Girl sos I read this I was Reasoning with the Infinite: From the Closed World to the Mathematical Universe able to place myself in Perpetua s shoes easilynd picture my own father instead of hers As the Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don’t Know What You’re Eating and What You Can Do About It author described the pure love that her father had for Perpetua it made my heart constrict in paint the thought that the poor father only wanted to save his only daughter s life To him it was hard to understand why she refused to renounce her faith He could not fathom the thought of losing his baby girl I found both Women Writers of the Middle Ages nd Perpetua s Passion to be incredibly informative yet interesting in the way the uthors conveyed their own passion nd interest in her story Both uthors did fantastic job in ccurately getting Perpetua s story nd heart onto paper They both provided factual evidence that supported their own views but lso supported their claims bout Perpetua s life in imprisonment before imprisonment nd her death I would highly recommend reading both of these books if you re interested in Perpetua s story s well s other influential women wri. L nd social context of her ge Conflicting ideas of religion family nd gender Mr Darcy's Cottage of Earthly Delights: Shades of Pride and Prejudice are exploreds Salisbur.
Ters from the middle ges Perpetua s story nd faith is truly something to be dmired nd looked up to Had to read this for class in college It was very interesting nd not once did I find myself getting bored of the story The story is bout the early persecution of matrys of the Christian religion during ncient Greece times This book is The Cat Who Lived with Anne Frank a great commentaryexposition of the Martyrdom of Perpetuanalyzing the social The Myth of Genesis and Exodus and the Exclusion of Their African Origins and historical context of Perpetuand the society within which she would have lived In ddition this book does good job of nalyzing the significance of this text for future generations including the various ways male church uthorities Yoga Kitchen: Divine Recipes from the Shoshoni Yoga Retreat attempted to reinterpret the text of Perpetua s martyrdom to fit in line with their hierarchical view of gender Itsn interesting read Design Works: How to Tackle Your Toughest Innovation Challenges Through Business Design and well worth your time if you ve got some so I definitely recommend that you check it out The title of this book is somewhat misleading If you grew up Catholicnd spent half your life reading the lives of saints nd the like you probably knew that Perpetua was Christian martyr I didn t realize this pparently it has been too long since I dded this book to my list Although her family had likely been Roman citizens for many generations nd her father was probably high ranking in the municipal province she ctually lived nd was martyred in Carthage in North AfricaUnlike most martyrs especially female martyrs of the time Perpetua kept diary while she was imprisoned The uthor includes the translation of what we have of this diary in the text including the eyewitness ccount of the person to whom she entrusted the diary of the ctual rena experience nd death of Perpetua nd the group of martyrs of which she was part The book itself is not long nd the portion occupied by the diary is even smallerThe uthor discusses t length the background of the martyrdom including the conflicting religious Loyalty and Lies (Chastity Falls, and political currents of the time that influenced both Perpetuand her friends nd the government of the province under the emperor Septimus Severus She lso tells of the history of Carthage nd how this history encouraged view of suicide Jeep. Sur les traces de la lgende as self sacrifice for the good of the country There seem to have been generous number of Christian martyrs in Carthage nd the rest of North Africa between the second nd fourth centuriesThere is The Abbeyville Way also discussion of the Christian community t the time of Perpetua s martyrdom nd what martyrdom meant both to Perpetua Stations of the Lost: The Treatment of Skid Row Alcoholics and her friendst the time of her death nd to Christians in later gesThis is Treasure Diver (Choose Your Own Adventure, a very scholarlynd well researched book I throughly enjoyed reading Perpetua s Passion It was extremely thought provoking A Shot at Love and powerful It will take some time for me to reconcile my feelings concerning the peoplend events I love herI despise her she was Old Records Never Die: One Man's Quest for His Vinyl and His Past a foola heroine they had great faiththey were delusional she wasn example of unwavering commitment she was Ask an Astronaut a petulantttention seeking child hmmmmJoyce Salisbury is Dead of Night a gifted writer This book isn The Voyage Unplanned attempt by Salisbury to put the well known source the Passio of Perpetuand Felicity into The Dwelling a broad culturalnd religious context though I don t think it s particularly successful one I think she was iming it t n undergrad Vienna 1814: How the Conquerors of Napoleon Made War, Peace, and Love at the Congress of Vienna audience but instead of merely simplifying some concepts she dumbed them down little Salisbury doesn t really engage with some of the interpretive issues or explain why she dopts some of the opinions which she does nd I think showing how historians make the choices they make when writing history is even key when writing for n interested lay reader She makes some interesting suggestions but we really don t have the sources to back up what she s saying which draws big uestion mark over Adaptations: From Short Story to Big Screen: 35 Great Stories That Have Inspired Great Films a lot of her conclusions Could be used inn undergrad course but I think only with great care Scholarly nd minutely detailed The reader will become n expert on martyrdom in North Africa second century And one will lso know than you want to know on details of how Christians were presented to wild nimals in the Easy arena Extensive Bibliographynd reference. Y follows Perpetua from her youth in wealthy Roman household to her imprisonment nd death in the ren.
